2018 has been a big year for singer Ammoye with a JUNO nomination for ‘The Light’ for Best Reggae Recording, and having spent 55 weeks on the Canadian reggae chart’s top 10 with 6 weeks at #1 for ‘Don’t Count Me Out’.
‘As Long As You Love Me’, Ammoye’s latest track, came about through synchronicity.
Ammoye met Donovan Germain in person in 2016 while in Jamaica working on writing and recording for her debut album The Light. Ammoye writes, “We were introduced via Exco Levi. I’ve always wanted to work with Donovan Germain, it’s been a dream of mine and it manifested through The Light as he produced two tracks on that record, ‘In a Di Ghetto’ and ‘Don’t Count Me Out’. We became very close during that opportunity and experience and so after doing that, we talked about working together more in the future.”
In the summer of 2017, Donovan came to Toronto for Jambana One World Music Festival and they picked up right where they had left off.
Ammoye continues, “While we were sitting together backstage at the festival before I had to hit the stage, he mentioned he had an idea he wanted to work with me on. Donovan said he would like to do a remake of the classic song ‘As Long As You Love Me’ originally sung by the Maytones, and that he wanted me to sing on it! I was elated and excited. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity !”
Ammoye writes, “He went back to JA shortly after and worked on the Riddim Track with the likes of Dean Fraser and long story short he sent the track to me here in Toronto and I went into the studio with Django Timoschenko who engineered my recording and we sent the vocals back to Jamaica to Donovan and they mixed and mastered it to perfection. And now here we are ready to share this magical track with the world!!!... I’m excited for everyone to hear it and feel it to their core and let their souls fall in love with it! “
