OVERLAPS & DISPUTES DIGEST

Kenneth Howard Smith,

Welcome to your weekly SoundExchange Overlaps & Disputes Digest! This is a snapshot of all rights owner overlaps & disputes activity for the past week as of June 2, 2026 6:32 a.m. ET.

While processing the claims of copyright owners for digital performance rights in sound recordings, the Customer Services team at SoundExchange identifies overlapping claims made by registrants and works with the claiming parties to facilitate resolution. For a quick guide to managing your rights owner overlaps and disputes check out this video.

This notice provides a breakdown of Overlaps & Disputes information that can be accessed, around the clock, via your SoundExchange Direct (SXDirect) portal, within the My Catalog section. In SXDirect you'll find:

  • Summary and detail views of every recording for which you are involved in an overlapping claim with another rights owner
  • The current statuses of the overlaps (Confirmation/Reconfirmation/Dispute)
  • The ability to take actions toward resolution

The purpose of this digest is to notify you of newly created overlapping claims and indicate any that require action on your part.

In the details below, you'll find the number of recordings currently in overlap or dispute affecting your account. When you click on a count, you'll be taken directly to the relevant section of SXDirect to review the details and maintain, relinquish, or edit the specifics of your claim such as percentage claimed and/or period of ownership.

The overlap process can involve several stages, some of which require action from you, while others will not. Please pay special attention to the areas marked "ACTION REQUIRED" to focus on claims currently awaiting a reply from you. The Confirmation and Reconfirmation steps are time-sensitive and subject to auto-resolution. In SXDirect, you can see the deadline for each recording in overlap. If you do not act in SXDirect prior to the noted deadline, your claim will be relinquished in favor of the other party and debits may be applied to your account.

Be advised that recordings in Dispute status must be resolved by contacting the other party using the email address listed on the details page. When a resolution has been reached, the party no longer asserting ownership should relinquish their claim via SXDirect.

* The number of new overlaps since the last email awaiting a confirmation reply from you. If you do not respond within 90 days, these overlaps will auto relinquish your claim.
** The number of new overlaps since the last email awaiting a reconfirmation reply from you. If you do not respond within 30 days, these overlaps will auto relinquish your claim.
Within the next 14 days, these overlaps will auto relinquish your claim.

Confirmation:

This is a count of recordings for which you are the Existing Sound Recording Copyright Owner (SRCO) where we have received a new claim from another registrant that overlaps with your period of ownership. Click the link indicating the number of overlaps currently awaiting Confirmation. In SXDirect, review each of the recordings in overlap and indicate via the portal whether you maintain, relinquish, or wish to edit your claim. Overlaps in Confirmation must receive a response from you within 90 days of receipt of this email. If we do not receive a response from you within 90 days the new claim will be accepted, which may result in a debit to your account.

Reconfirmation:

This is a count of recordings for which you have made a New claim already associated to an Existing SRCO. Click the link indicating the number of overlaps currently awaiting Reconfirmation. In SXDirect, review each of the recordings in overlap and indicate via the portal whether you maintain, relinquish, or wish to edit your claim. During Reconfirmation, when you maintain your claim (or make specific edits), the status of the overlap will change to Dispute, and all future royalties will be placed on hold. Overlaps in Reconfirmation must receive a response from you within 30 days from receipt of this email. If we do not receive a response from you within 30 days your new claim will be automatically relinquished.

Dispute:

This is a count of recordings for which both the Existing and New SRCOs have maintained their claims. Royalties for these recordings are now on hold until resolution between all parties. Click the count indicating the number of recordings currently in Dispute. In SXDirect, you can review each of the recordings in Dispute, find the contact information of the other SRCO(s), and act towards resolution by reaching out to the other parties by using the emails listed on the details page. Once recordings have been escalated to a Dispute status, you no longer need to maintain your claim. Instead, when you’ve reached an agreement with the other claimant(s), those SRCOs no longer asserting ownership of the recordings should relinquish their claims. The Dispute status is not subject to a timer and automatic relinquishment does not apply. Disputes involving foreign collection societies will still require additional action by SoundExchange.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter, and we look forward to hearing from you soon.
